The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development e.V. (IOER) in Dresden, Germany,  advertises the following position as a part time fixed-term work contract for three years (according to the German law on fixed-term contracts in science – WissZeitVG):

Ph.D. position: Built environment in a circular economy

TV-L E-13, 50% (3 years, 20 hours per week)

The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) in Dresden is a non-university research center in the field of the spatial sciences and a member of the Leibniz Association. We investigate the characteristics and dynamics of spatial sustainability transformations and their acceleration in the context of the global ecological crisis. The advertised position is allocated to the research area “Resource Efficiency of Settlement Structures”.

Task description

The position focuses on Material Flow Analysis (MFA) based investigations of the built environment in a spatial planning context. The research topic should be oriented at the analysis and modelling of recycling paths towards a circular economy in the construction sector, considering all relevant spatial aspects of the built environment (natural mines, urban mines, recycling facilities, secondary use and deposits), as well as the key drivers, dynamics and challenges of business models for a circular economy in the construction sector.

Expected skills and competencies

We expect candidates to have obtained an excellent master degree in e.g. waste management, civil engineering, architecture, spatial planning, material sciences, environmental sciences, industrial engineering, physics or a related field, providing a relevant background to the task expected. We expect a high level of English proficiency, as well as strong team working and self-organization skills. Experiences in MFA and interdisciplinary research would be an asset.
