Petroleum Fuel Life Cycle Assessment

Requisition Number: 405458 Location: Lemont, IL
Functional Area: Research and Development Division: ES-Energy Systems
  Education Required: Doctorate Degree
Position Description

The Systems Assessment Group (SAG) of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has been conducting assessments of advanced vehicle technologies and new transportation fuels over the last 25 years. It has developed the GREET® (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation) model for estimating energy use, emissions, and water consumption on a life-cycle basis for conventional and new vehicle/fuel systems (seehttps://greet.es.anl.gov for details).

The GREET model has more than 35,000 registered users worldwide, including academia, industry, and regulatory agencies. Besides, the Group has examined economic and cost effects of new vehicle technologies, infrastructure buildup, and transportation energy systems. The SAG has been working closely with auto and energy industries, universities, and governmental agencies to evaluate energy, environmental, and economic impacts of advanced vehicle technologies and new transportation fuels. The SAG continues to assess conventional and advanced fuels production technologies for their energy, environmental, and economic effects.

A post doctorial researcher position is now open for a candidate with expertise and experience in petroleum fuel life cycle analysis (LCA) with special expertise in crude supply, crude recovery, and petroleum refining.

Position Requirements
We expect you to have:

  • A Ph.D. degree in energy and engineering fields, or related fields, and be familiar with energy and environmental impacts of oil and gas products.
  • A strong understanding of supply and demand of different crude types globally, petroleum refining, and LCA of petroleum fuels.
  • Familiarity with the GREET LCA model is desirable.
  • Proficiency at extracting energy and environmental data for the petroleum sector, be familiar with linear programming (LP) models for petroleum refining, and be able to process LP model results for LCA applications.
  • The candidate should have computer programming skills in MS Excel and other relevant software.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are also required.

Hydrogen Delivery Techno-Economic Analysis

Requisition Number: 403506 Location: Lemont, IL
Functional Area: Research and Development Division: ES-Energy Systems
  Education Required: Doctorate Degree

Position Description
The Systems Assessment Group of the Energy Systems Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has been conducting hydrogen production, delivery, storage, and infrastructure analysis for over 10 years. With support from DOE, the group has developed the HDSAM (Hydrogen Delivery Scenario Analysis Model) for hydrogen delivery analysis, the HRSAM (Hydrogen Refueling Station Analysis Model) for hydrogen refueling analysis, the H2SCOPE (Hydrogen Station Cost Optimization and Performance Evaluation) model for thermodynamic evaluation of various onboard storage pressure and dispensing options/methods, and the GREETTM (Greenhouse gas, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation) model for life-cycle analysis of hydrogen and other advanced fuels for transportation applications.

The Systems Assessment Group has been interacting with industries, government agencies, and research institutions in evaluating the cost of delivering hydrogen from the production facility to the vehicles’ tanks. The current research includes examining various components in the gaseous and liquid hydrogen delivery pathways, identifying major cost drivers in various delivery options, and suggesting options to reduce the total delivery cost of hydrogen. The group is also examining the effect of other parameters like vehicle storage type, working pressure, and refueling protocols/methods on the refueling cost of hydrogen.

A post-doctoral appointee position is now open to conduct in-depth techno-economic and thermodynamic/fluid dynamics analysis of various liquid and gaseous hydrogen delivery pathways suitable for various dispensing options and protocols. The candidate will use existing models to evaluate various technology options for reducing hydrogen delivery and refueling infrastructure costs. The candidate will collect data from the technical literature and through interactions with other national laboratories, academia, industry, and other organizations. The candidate will work with the hydrogen analysis team in expanding the existing Argonne models to evaluate the potential of current and new technologies in achieving the DOE performance and cost targets of dispensed hydrogen.

Position Requirements
Qualified individuals should have:

  • Oobtained a Ph.D. within the last 3 years in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related areas.
  • Familiarity with thermodynamics, heat transfer, and life cycle analysis methods.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer programming skills, preferably in MS Excel and Visual Basic, are also desirable.
