The Role

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest Engineering Schools in the UK. You will have an emerging (for Lecturer) or strong (for Senior Lecturer) track record in research and a desire to support and inspire the next generation of Newcastle University graduates.

Based within the Environmental Engineering Group you will be part of a vibrant team of environmental engineers and scientists. We are at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions to the challenges of clean air, soil and water, sanitation, resilient cities and circular economies in a time of global change. We promote excellence by creating a culture and environment where working together is the norm. We pool our resources and our networks, in the university, the UK and across the world, to drive innovation and creativity for a healthy planet and society. To complement this team, we seek an excellent Lecturer/Senior Lecturer with a distinct vision for the future of environmental engineering. We welcome applicants from across the field of environmental engineering. Our primary criteria are excellence in research and teaching, and commitment to our ethos of creativity and collegiality.

You will benefit from access to excellent research groups and facilities in Environmental Engineering, Water Research, Renewable Energy, and beyond.

Our diverse colleague population attracts a broad range of bright, active, and engaged students from across the World, with our flagship Environmental Engineering MSc running since 1963. We are part of the Global Water Security and Sustainability Hub which works with partner institutions in Africa, Asia, South America, and the UK using cutting-edge research to address challenges faced by developing countries. We believe that a rich mix of people with different backgrounds will help us create a culture in which intellectually ambitious academics will want to work within a creative and collegiate environment.

Specifically, we are looking for a candidate who will contribute to a greater diversity in our staff and will:

  • bring new ideas and different perspectives to both teaching and research
  • refresh our engagement and challenge our thinking
  • enhance our collegiate experience and make us a more effective team
  • provide more diverse role models, attract a wider range of students and enhance our pastoral care.

We are keen to attract applicants who:

  • will actively contribute to all aspects of the Discipline, and the School
  • have a strategic approach and see a wide range of options in their own work and the work of the School
  • are enthusiastic and committed to new ventures and innovations in teaching.

All applicants who fulfil the job criteria are welcome, and working arrangements can be flexible to meet specific needs. We are keen to offer opportunities, where possible, to people from groups who are currently underrepresented in academia generally and the engineering discipline specifically. All applications will be considered on the merits, experience and qualifications of the candidate as these relate to the requirements and specifications of the post.

A research and teaching statement should be uploaded as part of the application.
